I've always known
that any activity done in a group setting greatly enhances the power of our
intentions. I want to share with you a few excerpts from recent research into
group consciousness and the power to heal.
"There's no doubt
that when AA works, it can be transformative. But what aspect of the program
deserves most of the credit? The act of surrendering to a higher power? The
making of amends? The simple admission that you have a problem? Stunningly, even
the most highly regarded AA experts have no idea. " says Lee Ann Kaskutas of the
Alcohol Research Group in Emeryville, California.
There is evidence
that a big part of AA's effectiveness may have nothing to do with the actual
steps. It may derive from something more fundamental: the power of the group.
The best way to
change human behavior
is to gather people into
groups. A study last year from the Journal of Behavior Therapy states: In
treating post-traumatic stress disorder, 88.3% of subjects undergoing group
therapy no longer exhibited symptoms versus 31.3% who had no contact with other
sufferers.
"Over the past decade,
researchers have found that if you practice focusing attention on your breath or
mantra, the brain will restructure itself to make concentration easier. If you
practice calm acceptance during meditation, you will develop a brain that is
more resilient to stress. And if you meditate while cultivating feelings of
love and compassion, your brain will develop in such a way that you
spontaneously feel more connected to others." Kelly McGonagall
From my own experience,
I know that in a group meditation practice the depth of the focus goes beyond my
individual abilities. I hope you can join us. namaste, dana
